You and your students can explore the interactive whiteboard interface right from the classroom podium through Smart Notebook Express. Smart Notebook Express is a free software that allows you to view, edit, and "play" with Smart notebook files.

  • Can I create brand new lessons in Smart Notebook Express? No, not really. However, if you or your students use Smart Boards and have access to SMART software, you can pull your lessons into Smart Notebook Express for editing and sharing. You can download a free 30 day trial version of SMART notebook software if you are interested in exploring the more robust version of this software. (This is recommended only for those who will be working with Smart Boards).
  • Can I create Smart Board lessons from Power Points? Yes. However, you can only pull in notebook files (.notebook) to Smart Notebook Express.
  • If I cannot create lessons for Smart Notebook Express, how can I find lessons to explore? So glad you asked! Find lesson plans and activities at the Smart Exchange. Lessons are searchable by content area, grade, and even state and common core standards. For example, try searching a content area in the Virginia Standards of Learning here.
  • How can students interact with these lessons and activities if we do not have Smart Boards? Right from the classroom podium. Each classroom in the School of Education is outfitted with a Hitachi interactive monitor. Using the mouse or monitor pen (stylus), you or your students can interact with a .notebook file in Smart Notebook Express.
