The classrooms are furnished with tables and chairs on wheels so that they can easily be moved into whatever arrangement is best for your class. However, by far the most interesting piece of furniture (from a technology point of view, of course) is the instructor's podium.

What's in the podium?

All classrooms are equipped with a state-of-the-art podium that controls all the technology elements in the room. The smaller screen embedded into the podium itself is the primary control. Activate it by simply tapping it twice with your finger. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter the system, and tap on icons and setting buttons to activate other equipment or change volume, brightness, magnification, and so forth. Your first indication that the system is coming on will usually be the sound of the large screen at the front of the room starting to lower. This action is automatic, but can be reversed by tapping on "Display settings" and then tapping on the "Screen up" button. The projector comes on automatically, but can be adjusted by tapping on the "Display settings" button. Once that screen appears, you can turn off the projector light without also turning off the projector by tapping the "Darken projector" button.

Use the keyboard on the slide-out tray to log in to the campus network. The large Hitachi screen acts as a traditional computer display. However, with the stylus provided (clipped to the back of the screen), you may annotate lecture slides in PowerPoint or other applications which offer that function. The CPU is housed in the podium and should always have its power on (yes . . . please do not turn off the power when you exit the system!). See below for more specific information about what applications are loaded on the computer.

The document camera is housed within the podium and slides out on its own tray. It may be located on either the left or right side, depending on where the podium is placed in the room. By using the podium touch screen, you can easily switch between the camera, the computer display, an Internet site, a video or audio file, or even cable TV programs. There are also cables available for connecting a laptop computer.

Some classrooms are equipped with flat screen monitors mounted on three of the four walls. These may also be activated through the instructor's podium. Once again, these controls are activated by tapping on the "Display settings" button on the touch screen.

What's on the computer?

We have loaded all the standard applications on each podium computer, plus a few you may not be familiar with:
  • Editors & Viewers: Adobe Reader
  • Courseware: Inspiration 9, Inspire Data, Kidspiration 3
  • MS Office: Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher plus others
  • Multimedia: iTunes, Quick Time, Real Player, Windows Media Player
  • Statistics: SPSS: Amos 18, PASW Statistics 18
  • Utilities: WinZip
  • Tidebreak Client 4 (rooms 2010 and 2016)

How to get help . . .

We always hope that the technology performs as it should, and we work hard to make sure that happens. However, if you ever experience a problem and need assistance immediately, please use the podium phone to call Ext. 1-4011. One of our support engineers will come to your classroom right away. A housekeeping note

Please remember to exit the system, being especially conscientious about turning off the projector. The light bulbs in the projectors (both in the conference rooms and classrooms) are extremely expensive -- to the tune of several hundred dollars each. Even if you know another class or meeting will be held later in the day, please do your part to conserve by turning off all devices anyway. Sometimes events are canceled or relocated without notice and leaving a projector on could turn out to be a very costly oversight.
